Abstract

Salts of a diamine with a dicarboxylic acid are prepared by mixing solutions of the two components in an alcoholic medium, and filtering or centrifuging the resulting salt, the alcoholic medium consisting at least partly of the water liquors recovered from a previous operation, if required after treatment with carbon. Specified solvents are methyl, ethyl and isopropyl alcohol. Hexamethylenediamine adipate is specified as amine salt. The products may be polymerized (see Division C3).ALSO:Fibre-forming polyamides, e.g. polyhexamethylene adipamide, are obtained by heating the diamine dicarboxylate salt prepared by mixing solutions of a diamine and a dicarboxylic acid in an alcoholic medium which is at least in part, e.g. 50-95%, recycled mother liquor after removal of a previous batch of amine salt (see Division C2). The salt may be formed at 20-60 DEG C., filtered off and the mother liquor treated with carbon before reuse. Alcohols specified are MeOH, EtOH and iso-PrOH and may contain up to 15% water.
