Abstract
The thermal stability of a high molecular weight oxymethylene polymer containing a major proportion of oxymethylene units and a minor proportion of alkylene units having at least two adjacent carbon atoms is improved by dissolving the polymer in a solvent and treating, e.g. heating under basic conditions to remove the unstable portions of the polymer. The solvent may preferably be a nonhydroxylic compound, e.g. dimethyl formamide, tetramethylene sulphone and bis(2-methoxyethyl)ether or a hydroxylic compound, e.g. benzyl alcohol or a mixture of water and isopropanol. Specified basic compounds are triethanolamine, the tetra-alkyl ammonium hydroxide, sodium acetate or hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium tetraborate and sodium sulphate. The polymers of the examples contain a comonomer 3% styrene or 2 1/2 % allyl hexoate, or 1 1/4 % divinyl benzene, or 3% vinyl acetate or 2% 2-vinyl-1,3-dioxan.
