Abstract

PURPOSE: The polymerization of formaldehyde is conducted in the presence of a catalyst of a complex from an aluminum compound and an amine to produce polyoxymethylenes of high polymerization degree and high heat stability.
CONSTITUTION: An aluminum compound of the formula (R, R1 are alkyl; 1 is 1W3) is mixed with an amine such as pyridine in an amount of 0.5W2 times the moles of the aluminum compound to form a complex. Then the resulting complex is supported on a finely powdery and dried polyoxymethylene in an amount of 10-2W10-5 mol/g on the aluminum compound basis. The polymerization of formaldehyde such as slurry polymerization is conducted using the above catalyst to produce the objective polyoxymethylene.
EFFECT: The resulting polymer shows sufficiently high heat stability without treatment of terminal groups.
