Abstract
1,034,094. Bearings. POLYMER CORPORATION. March 26, 1963 [April 13, 1962], No. 11926/63. Heading F2A. [Also in Division H2] A self-lubricated article, such as a bearing or a brush for an electric motor, comprises a sintered metal and thermally degraded polytetrafluoroethylene contained in the interstices of the sintered metal. The thermally degraded PTFE is prepared by heating the resin to a temperature between 1000 and 1500 F. for a period up to one half-hour and allowing the resulting liquid to cool to room temperature. The degraded material is ground to a convenient particle size and reheated to a temperature between 600 and 800 F. to oxidize any free carbonaceous material and to volatilize any low boiling materials. As an alternative to cooling to room temperature, the degraded material may be cooled to a temperature of 600 to 800 F. which is maintained for an adequate time to obtain the same result. The degraded PTFE is milled until it will pass an 80-mesh screen and mixed with finely divided silver and cadmium oxide. After milling the mixture for about three hours and passing it through a 325- mesh screen, slugs of inch diameter and length are pressed from it at a pressure of about 25 tons per square inch before sintering for two hours at 720 F. The PTFE constitutes 9À6% of the volume of the mixture and the silver and cadmium oxide 79À5 and 10À9% respectively.
