Abstract

Wafer sheets 16 form a stack on a platform 14 of a magazine 10 and the section created by a suction head 20 is just insufficient to lift the uppermost wafer from the stack when an opening 22 (Fig. 1, not shown) in the head 20 is fully uncovered by a perforated section 32 in an endless web 24. This web comprises an integral number of pitches each of which is formed by a blank web section 30 and a larger perforated web section 32. A pitch of the web 24 is equal to the length of a wafer sheet. When a blank web section 30 passes across the suction head opening 22 the suction to which the uppermost wafer is exposed is cut-off. As the trailing edge of the blank web section 30 passes the edge 36 (Fig. 1, not shown) of the suction head 20 the increased suction lifts the uppermost wafer on to the suction web 24 and the wafer is carried past the suction head to be deposited on an endless conveyer 28. A lifting mechanism, which raises the platform an amount equal to a wafer thickness when a wafer is removed from the stack, is controlled by a detector 38. A magazine 12 is interchangeable with the magazine 10.
