Abstract

1,033,935. Electron multipliers. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. June 10, 1963 [June 26, 1962], No. 23105/63. Heading H1D. An electron multiplier comprises a partcylindrical resistive, secondary-emissive coating 14 and a pair of field-shaping electrodes 16, 18 extending radially from adjacent the ends of coating 14 towards the tube axis, so that when a potential difference is applied between the ends of coating 14 and between electrodes 16, 18, electrons follow paths 30. As shown, a photo-cathode 22 is provided on electrode 16, but alternatively, the negative end of resistive coating 14 may be photo-emissive. Electrode 18 may be positively biased relative to the positive end of coating 14 to act as electron collector, or may be connected to coating 14, electrons being collected by a small plate or grid in front of electrode 18. Electrodes 16, 18 may be metal plates, or conductive coatings on insulating plates or on the sides of a V-shaped wedge formed in envelope 12. The resistive, secondary-emissive coating 14 may have a surface resistivity between 10<SP>5</SP> and 10<SP>10</SP> ohm and may comprise a mosiac of conducting secondary-emissive elements on a resistive film.
