Abstract

1,033,545. Valves. HORSTMANN GEAR CO. Ltd. May 5, 1965 [May 13, 1964], No. 19868/64. Heading F2V. An electrically operable valve which is wholly manually operable in the event of failure of the source of electric power and which can again be made wholly automatically operable when the source of electric power is restored comprises a reciprocable member biased by a spring 12, Fig. 1, to close the valve and a solenoid 2 to open it, an arm 15 biased towards an inoperative position and movable manually to open the valve, and retaining means 14, 20 for holding the reciprocable member in the manually displaced position and being manually displaceable to permit the spring 12 to close the valve, the retaining means also being adapted to be displaced from its holding position whenever the solenoid is energized. When the retaining means is rotated about its pivot 17 on engagement by a spring-loaded press button 30 its tip 20 lifts the valve from its seat and by engagement in a recess 20 holds the valve open until either the solenoid is energized and the retaining means is restored by its own weight to its original position or a second press button 23 causes the retaining means to disengage the recess. The retaining means may be in the form of a bell-crank lever with the press buttons oppositely disposed in the valve housing or a substantially vertical lever with a central pivot having press buttons mounted on the same side of the housing at positions above and below the pivot. In a third construction, the retaining means consists of a bell-crank lever 45 (Fig. 3, not shown) which frees a lever 50 holding the valve open when it is rotated by a solenoid 42 or by a manual lever 73. The main solenoid may be connected to the supply through time and temperature controlled switches in a control system for a gas fired burner.
