Abstract

Hydrogenated copolymers of either ethylene and stilbene or ethylene and a -methyl styrene (see Division C3) are used as lubricating oil additives. The hydrogenated copolymers are added to the lubricating oils in a minor amount e.g. 0.01 to 15% by weight. The compositions may also contain phenolic antioxidants, arylamines, dialkyl sulphides and anti-scuffing agents such as organic phosphites, phosphates or phosphonates and their thioderivatives and P2S3-terpene reaction products.ALSO:The hydrogenation of a copolymer of ethylene and stilbene or a copolymer of ethylene and a -methyl styrene is carried out in the presence of platinum or a platinum salt in a diatomite or cobalt or a cobalt salt in a diatomite. Hydrogenation is preferably carried out in a hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature of 100 DEG to 25 DEG C. and a pressure of 500 to 2,000 p.s.i. The diatomite is preferably kieselguhr or celite.
