Abstract

A shaped carbon or graphite body is prepared by (a) applying to a mould of the desired shape a layer of a composition comprising one or more of furfuryl alcohol, a partial condensation product thereof, an incompletely cured furan resin, an incompletely cured phenolic resin, styrene, divinylbenzene or trivinylbenzene, and a curing agent and/or polymerization catalyst therefor, but no filler therefor, (b) curing and/or hardening said layer, (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) at least twice, and (d) carbonizing or graphatizing the cured and/or hardened resin. The composition may be applied to a glass mould or to a mould made from a material having a low melting-point.
