Abstract

A method of producing a vehicle friction element from a composite filler mixture consisting of at least about five percent by weight of asbestos fibers and a thermosetting resin, and comprising: arranging a mold cavity limited by one member die and a male member that when coupled are generally adjusted to the geometry of the friction element, incorporate in at least one of the members a plurality of ducts that go from the mold cavity to the ambient atmosphere, said ducts being of a previously determined large cross section; covering said conduits, at the ends thereof leading into the molding cavity, with perforated filter means having openings of a predetermined smaller cross section, compared to the cross section of said conduits; add to the cavity of the matrix member a selected quantity of said mixture and then apply the male member to compress the mixture to its final density, said ducts allowing the escape of the air entrapped in the mixture as the mixture is compressed by the member male, and said filter means preventing the mixture from obstructing said conduits, and removing the densified part from the mold cavity, and subjecting it to thermal curing to harden the binder.
