Abstract

A soil mulch comprising a polysaccharide, cellulosic or ligno-cellulosic material containing from 1.5 to 3% nitrogen is given a dark colour by heating it to a temperature below its combustion temperature. Corn cobs, corn kernels and pinewood sawdust are referred to as the materials used. A nitrogen containing salt of a mineral acid (e.g. ammonium sulphate or mono-ammonium phosphate) may be included in the mulch.
