Abstract
A method for agglomerating earthy iron ore fines, or a mixture of earthy iron ore fines and iron ore concentrate fines, comprises screening the fines to minus 3/8 inch, providing a moisture content of from 2 to 5% in said fines, briquetting the fines thus prepared at ambient temperature and at a pressure of from 2000 to 30,000 p.s.i. into briquettes of double-convex shape, depositing a layer of the briquettes from 8 to 20 inches thick upon a porous moving belt, preheating the layer with downdraught heated air at 600 DEG to 2200 DEG F. for 3 to 6 minutes, downdraught firing the layer with heated air at 2300 DEG to 2500 DEG F. for 6 to 12 minutes to sinter together the ore particles within the briquettes without sintering together the individual briquettes, and cooling the layer before discharging from the belt. The downdraught firing of the layer may be continued for an additional 1 to 3 minutes with heated air at 1600 DEG to 2000 DEG F. before cooling. 1 to 7% of ground limestone may be added to the fines after screening.
