Abstract

In a textile machine in which a supply of rovings S are fed over a lifting roll 15 Fig. 1, not (shown), to drafting rollers 13 and thence in the form of attenuated strands R to packaging means 17, 18, 19, breakage slackness of the strands is detected at points before or after the drafting rollers by detecting means B and A respectively. In the event of such a fault the detecting means operate through electrical circuits (see Division H2) to stop the driving motor for the machine and to illuminate a signal light which gives a steady signal if the fault occurs after the drafting system and a flashing signal if before. The detecting means A and B may include a number of upstanding wires 20 each of which is slightly inclined to the vertical so as to rest against a p moving strand or sliver. Each wire 20 is secured at its lower end to a shaft 21 of an electric switch so that breakage of the strand allows the wire to fall over and thus to operate the switch. In an alternative construction of the defecting means B, Figs. 4-8, (not shown), a rod extends transversely beneath the slivers, being supported or suspended at its ends in such manner that a broken strand will drape itself over the rod causing it to rock to a position in which the contacts of a switch associated therewith are closed. In this construction the detecting means are not normally in contact with the moving strands. The electrical circuit preferably includes means by which stopping of the motor is prevented temporarily if the transversing carriage is reversing.
