This invention relates generally to stop motion apparatus for textile machinery and in particular to stop motion apparatus for draw frames to provide complete control.
The purpose of draw frames is to combine and/or blend a multiplicity of strands of sliver yarns into a single sliver and at the same time partially or wholly place the fibers in the sliver parallel to one another. In any particular draw frame operation you are combining a certain preselected number of strands of sliver to provide a certain quality of yarn to the roving frame. If one of the strands of sliver to be combined should break and the draw frame is not stopped, the resultant product from the draw frame will not be of the desired quality and will, therefore, have to be reworked or discarded as waste. Furthermore, when the draw frame is equipped with a power driven creel the creel will tend to pile up sliver on the creel table until the operator spots the broken sliver and pieces up the broken end. To prevent this waste of sliver and time of the operator it is necessary, to correct this sit-nation, that the draw frame be designed so that the draw frame will be stopped immediately if a sliver should break anywhere between the incoming sliver cans and the draw box where the sliver is combined and drafted.
Therefore, it is an object of the invention to provide a draw frame with a stop motion control which will stop the operation of the draw frame if a sliver should break between the power driven creels and the draw box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a draw frame which employs a simple and inexpensive stop motion control to stop the draw frame in case the sliver breaks prior to blending and drafting in the draw box.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a stop motion for a draw frame which will prevent a pile up on the creel table if a strand of sliver should break.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be clearly apparent as the specification proceeds to describe the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a partial top schematic view of a two delivery draw frame;
FIGURE 2 is an elevation View taken on line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a blown-up cross-sectional view taken through one set of entry rolls;
FIGURE 4 is a view similar to FIGURE 3 except the sliver is shown broken; and
FIGURE 5 is a schematic simplified circuit diagram of the stop motion control circuit.
Looking at FIGURES l and 2 in particular the general operation of the draw frame is shown. A multiplicity of strands of sliver S are delivered individually from individual sliver cans to the creel table 12, supported by suitable support 14, through the power driven creel including the lifter roll 16 and the presser roll 18. Normally the lifter roll 16 will be the driven roll and the presser roll 18 will be a weighted roll. From the rolls 16 and 18 each individual strand of sliver passes around guide member 20 and is delivered into the draw box 22 where the individual strands of sliver are blended or combined, drafted and coiled into a sliver can 24.
If the sliver S should break between the cans 10 and the rolls 16 and 18 or should run out, the rolls 16 and 3,310,844 Patented Mar. 28, 1967 18 would make contact and energize solenoid coil 26 (FIGURE 5), thereby opening switch 28 and breaking the circuit to the draw frame and lifter roll drive means 30. The operator can then piece up the end or replace the sliver can whichever is necessary and then restart the draw frame. In normal operation the sliver S will prevent the rolls 16 and 18 from making contact with one another. Drive means 30 can be connected to the draw frame and the lifter rolls 16 in any suitable manner.
Mounted to the creel table 12 between the creel table and the rolls 16 and 18 is an elongated channel member 32 of copper or other suitable conductive material. Channel member 32 preferably extends between four sets of rolls 16 and 18 but it is obvious that it could extend the whole length of the creel table or a shorter channel member could be provided for each set of rolls 16 and 18. Pivotally mounted to the creel table 12 by suitable supports 33 is a U-shaped Wire member 34 which in normal operation hangs in the center of channel member 32 but does not engage the channel member. Channel member 32 is connected into the draw frame drive means control circuit through insultated wire member 36 held in position on the under side of the front 38 of the creel table 12 by a bolt 40 and a nut 42 secured thereto.
Assume now that the sliver should break somewhere between the rolls 16 and 18 and the draw box 22. As soon as the break occurs the sliver S from the cans 10 will begin to pile up on the creel table 12. When this pile up occurs the sliver will tend to accumulate in the channel member 32 (FIGURE 4) and cause the U-shaped wire member 34 to pivot in one direction or the other and contact the channel member 32. As soon as the wire member 34 contacts the channel member 32 a circuit will be completed to energize the solenoid coil 26 causing switch 28 to be opened and thereby breaking the circuit to the draw frame drive means 30 and stopping the draw frame. As soon as the end ha been pieced up the operator and the channel 32 cleared the U-shaped wire member 34 will assume its normal operating position and the draw frame can be restarted.
It can readily be seen that the herein disclosed stop motion apparatus provides protection to the draw frame if the sliver should run out or if the sliver should break between the sliver cans and the draw box. As previously pointed out the disclosed stop motion will stop the draw frame before the run out or breakage condition will allow the draw box to blend and draft strands of less number than desired. This, of course, results in a saving of yarn that is of off-standard weight and saves considerable time of the operator since he no longer has to remove light sliver from can 24. Furthermore, to aid the operator it is within the scope of the invention to wire a light 44 in series with both of the disclosed controls so that not only will the draw frame be stopped but the operator also will be signaled when the draw frame has stopped.
Although I have described in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention, I contemplate that many changes may be made without departing from the scope or spirit of my invention, and I desire to be limited only by the claim.
