Abstract

978,993. Sliver-monotoring apparatus. SOC. ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES. Jan. 1, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961], No. 19/62. Headings D1D and D1F. In a sliver-monotoring, for use with apparatus for feeding a sliver &c. between two rollers, which includes an electrical element, e.g. a relay, in circuit with a supply source and with both rollers, to be switched to a normal or abnormal position according as the rollers are not, or are in electrical contact and to control a signal or cut-off circuit, an additional contact member is included in the circuit so as to switch the element to abnormal condition when the member is moved into engagement with one of the rollers by means responsiveto excessive thickness in the sliver and/or an accumulation of sliver immediately behind the rollers. The feeding apparatus shown precedes a drawing-frame, and comprises a common driven roller 1 and a series of upper rollers e.g. 4, 5. These are arranged on pins, the rollers of each pair being rotatably mounted on a shaft 6 carried by a support 7 rotatably mounted on a pin 8 secured to an arm 9 pivoted at 11. Roller 5 is connected to a source of electricity through a solenoid 29 and roller 1 is earthed; when a sliver is absent through breakage in front of the rollers, the rollers contact to close a circuit to light a lamp 30 or initiate a stop-motion. To make this apparatus responsive to links and thick places &c. in the sliver, a fork 35 of selected width having an adjustable counterweight at 37 and tending to move away from the roller, carries a finger 41, which, when a thick part of the sliver gets caught in the fork, is moved into contact with the roller 5 to establish a circuit to the solenoid, the member 35 being earthed. To make the apparatus responsive to an accumulation of sliver behind the rollers e.g. by a break behind the rollers, a member 45 carried by an arm secured to the pivot 36 of the fork 35 is placed behind the rollers. In normal running, a guide directs the sliver to the left clear of the member 45; should a break occur behind the rollers, the sliver builds up against member 45 to bring contact 41 against the roller. This arrangement is particularly useful in the case of the outermost of a set of slivers fed together over a table 20, where a sliver, unlike an intermediate sliver 49, will not be carried along by a sliver on either side of it when it breaks. In modifications, (a) the contact 41 may be made to contact the lower roller of the feed pair, (b) the relay 29 can be normally energized and be de-energized when a fault occurs and (c) the lamp 30 may be included directly in the warning-circuit.
