Abstract

Melamine is made from urea by a process which comprises continuously introducing molten urea into the bottom of a vertically arranged heated zone in a reactor, said heated zone being produced and maintained at at least 350 DEG C., preferably 375 DEG to 450 DEG C., by heaters within the said vessel, directing said urea into intimate contact with a hot molten mixture comprising melamine, unreacted urea and reaction by-products, whereby said urea is caused to pyrolyse to melamine and gases are produced which, with the aid of the thermal lift in said heating zone, cause the reaction mixture to circulate upward in said heated zone with continued pyrolysis of the urea, removing part of the melamine and gaseous by-products from the upper portion of said reaction vessel, causing recirculation of the remaining part within said vessel to the lower portion of said vessel by downward thermal flow produced by establishing a relatively cooler zone in said reaction vessel, and maintaining the pressure at at least 1000 p.s.i.g. (70 kg./cm.2) and preferably at 1500 to 3000 p.s.i.g. (105 to 210 kg./cm.2). During any interruption of urea feed, ammonia gas is fed into the reactor into the bottom of the heated zone to maintain circulation. Prior to commencement of the urea feed, the reactor is fed with hot water and heated to 350 DEG C. at 3500 p.s.i.g. (245 kg./cm.2) and then the water is drained and the reactor is then preferably purged with ammonia. The invention is described with reference to a drawing of (not shown) an apparatus which is the subject matter of Specification 1,033,027. Reference is made to Specification 735,356.
