Abstract
A reaction apparatus, especially suitable for the conversion of urea to melamine according to Specification 1,033,026, comprises a vertical pressure resistant reaction vessel, inlet means to the bottom portion of said reaction vessel for continuously feeding liquid feed thereinto, a series of vertical electrical heating rods for heating the materials within said reaction vessel, particularly wherein the inlet means opens into the reaction vessel at the base of said heating rods, said heaters being so disposed within said vessel as to provide therein, in use of the apparatus, a hot zone to induce gas and thermal lift and a laterally adjacent relatively cooler zone to allow down-draught and a dip tube extending vertically downwardly from the top of said reaction vessel, to a level above the level of the top of the heaters for continuously removing the reaction product and by-products therefrom. A particularly suitable arrangement for the heating rods is in an annular array around a vertically disposed hollow partition member, the space within which forms said cooler zone and said partition member including vents near its lower end, preferably the lower end of said partition member being located immediately above the inlet means and having a horizontal partition below said vents for directing the material entering from said inlet to the lower portion of said hot zone via further vents below said horizontal partition. A preferred shape of the apparatus and partition is cylindrical. All surfaces which in use come into contact with the reactant or reaction mixture are preferably made of corrosion resistant material, especially titanium; the electric heating rods in the preferred embodiment being of the bayonet type. The invention is described with reference to three drawings (not shown) which show the apparatus overall in section and details of the base and head of the apparatus.
