Abstract
Formaldehyde is polymerized by contacting its vapour with acetone in liquid form together with a formaldehyde polymerization catalyst. The liquid may be vigorously agitated, may be anhydrous or may contain up to 5% water. The formaldehyde vapour may be a mixture of anhydrous formaldehyde and an inert diluent or of formaldehyde and acetone. The catalyst may be formic or acetic acid, boron trifluoride, metal halides, metal salts of organic acids, tertiary amines, quaternary ammonium salts, quaternary phosphinium salts, phosphines, potassium hydroxide or carbon dioxide. The unpolymerized formaldehyde vapour may be vented and returned to the polymerization.
