Abstract

1,032,178. Pallets for handling loads. W. H. SHERIDAN & SON Ltd. July 22, 1964 [Aug. 23, 1963], No. 33951/63. Heading B8H. Figs. 1, 2 show a two-way entry pallet each face being constructed of four main decking boards 2 and two shorter decking boards 4, 6 attached to three wooden bearers 8. The boards 6 are narrower than the boards 2, 4 and are removably attached to the bearers 8 by countersunk coach bolts 10 and nuts. Two metal reinforcing and lifting devices 18 convert the pallet into a stevedore's pallet by providing loops 24 for the attachment of chains &c. adjacent to each of the four corners of the pallet. Each device 18 consists of upper and lower parallel arms 20, 22 of square steel tubing having round section steel loops 24 welded at each end (with an insert shown dotted to reinforce the adjacent bearer 8). Reinforcements 26, 28 are welded between the arms 20, 22 and are so arranged that they fit snugly against the bearers 8 when the boards 6 are temporarily removed to enable the devices 18 to be fitted adjacent to and transversely of the bearers 8 and upon the upper and lower faces thereof. Fig. 5 shows a four-way entry pallet with two of the metal devices 18 built-in with crossmembers 32, 34 welded to the arms 20, 22 and with tie members 36. Fig. 6 shows a modification of the pallet shown in Figs. 1, 2 wherein the loops 24 are omitted and lifting rings 90 provided on I-beams 88 retained at each end by a spring 92 engaging a chamfer 91 on a bearer 80.
