Reels and reel-carriages.-In order to facilitate access to the contact gear in the interior of a drum for winding and unwinding cables for use with electric cranes &c., the end or flange plates of the drum are made in removable sections. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, each of the flange plates consists of two sections A, A<1> and B, B<1>, to which the drum C is connected by annular flanged rings or supports K, K<1>. The drum rests on a framework comprising horizontal bars R, R<1> and transverse plates E, F having hubs G, H, the annular rings K, K<1> being cut away to accommodate the ends of the plates E, F. The spindle D on which the drum revolves is connected to standards M, M<1> by nuts M<2> and an adjusting-nut M<3>, and carries stationary rings N forming one part of the contact gear, the other part of the gear or contact brushes P to which the inner ends of the cables on the drum are connected being carried by the revolving framework E, F, R, R<1>. Any section, for example A', can he removed by unscrewing the bolts which connect it with the end plate E and with the annular ring K. In order to dismount the drum C entirely, a section such as A<1> is removed, the cables are disconnected from the contact brushes P, the bolts connecting the section A with the ring K and the sections B, B' with the plate F are unscrewed, and the standard M<1> is removed, thus allowing the liange plate B, B<1> and drum to be separated from the flange plate A, A<1> and the revolving frame. According to modifications, the spindle D may carry the brush gear and the revolving frame the contact rings, or the contact rings may be mounted concentrically on the spindle D and the brushes carried by the annular rings K or K<1>.
