Abstract
1,031,182. Winches. VICKERS Ltd. Feb. 17, 1965 [Jan. 22, 1964], No. 2851/64. Heading B8B. A grab winch comprises a drum 3 driven by motor 1 to wind up or pay out a grab holding line 4 and a grab closing line 5, a sheave assembly 6 over which line 5 is passed and which assembly is linearly displaceable by a fluid ram 9, or mechanical means, to cause the grab (not shown) to open or close. The sheave assembly 6 is moved in vertical guides 10, Fig. 2 (not shown), the latter having a friction track longitudinally thereof which is engaged by a spring- loaded friction wheel mounted for rotation with a sheave 12 of assembly 6, this frictional engagement controlling the speed of rotation of the sheave 12 during linear movement of the assembly 6 to maintain a tension in the line 5 between sheaves 12 and 8. In the retracted position of the ram 9, the grab is closed, aided by gravity. The motor 1 and ram 9 are controlled by a single lever movable into four positions at right angles to each other, positions of the lever intermediate any two of the said four positions providing a combined operation of motor and ram.
