Abstract

1,031,148. Reverse parallel valves for controlling A.C. power. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 14, 1964 [Sept. 17, 19631, No. 37442/64. Heading H2H. A pair of reverse parallel connected valves 1, 2 are controlled by a thyristor 5 connected to the centre taps of autotransformers 7, 8 as shown. Before either valve fires most of the supply voltage 4 appears across the autotransformer 7 and when the thyristor 5 is fired by a phaseshifted pulse 11 or by closure of a switch shunting these conductors half of transformer 7 is connected in parallel with half of transformer 8 through rectifier 12 or 13, thus placing the whole of the voltage of transformer 8 across the cathodes and ignition electrodes of the valves, firing whichever valve has positive voltages at both the ignition electrode and anode. Firing of either valve reduces the voltage across the transformer 7 below that of a Zener diode 6 which cuts off the thyristor 5 to prevent afterburning. The transformer 8 may be arranged to step up the voltage from transformer 7 by suitable taps. The arrangement enables a thyristor of reduced voltage rating to be used. The load 3 may be a welding transformer.
