Abstract
Maleic acid anhydride, produced by oxidation of hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene is recovered from the hot reaction gases by passing said gases to a condenser which is maintained at a temperature below the condensation point of the anhydride but above the dew point of water, removed the condensed anhydride from the condenser, passing the residual gases, which still contain some anhydride, to a scrubber through which is cycled a concentrated maleic acid solution which extracts the gaseous anhydride, drawing off part of the enriched maleic acid solution from the recycle stream, cooling said part of solution to separate maleic acid crystals, separating the crystals from the major part of the mother liquor and returning said mother to the maleic acid scrubbing solution, passing the wet maleic acid crystals to a heater maintained at a temperature which will re-dissolve the crystals, but is low enough to prevent maleic acid converting to fumaric acid, and passing the resultant liquid as a spray or a gas into the hot gas stream leaving the oxidation reactor, the amount of anhydride recycling to the said reactor gases being substantially equal to the anhydride in the gases leaving the condenser. The liquid maleic acid from the heater may be passed to a rapid evaporator where it splits into anhydride and water and is subsequently fed to the hot reaction gases as such, or it may be fed to an injector and sprayed into the hot reaction gases as a liquid which subsequently splits into anhydride and water. The maleic acid anhydride may be recovered from the condenser as a liquid or solid, depending on the temperature maintained therein. The process is illustrated by reference to drawings (not shown).
