Abstract

[Also in Divisions El and H2] A series of double-ended lamps 2 are spaced apart along a hollow waterproof tube 4 of transparent or translucent plastics material and separated by carriers 8 having pairs of diametrically opposite grooves through which the conductors 6 for the lamps pass, the conductors being connected to pins in a plug at the end of the tube 4, a spring being arranged between the plug and the first of the carriers 8. The carriers may have metal plates at the outer ends carrying lugs 14 soldered to the conductors, springs inside the carriers connected to the plates making contact with the ends of the lamp. In place of the lugs 14, pins may be thrust through the insulation of the conductors and pass through holes in the carriers to make contact with rivets connected to the springs (Fig. 11, not shown). In a modification, each lamp is housed in a rigid holder, the holders being connected by tensioning wires. Conducting leads are connected to plugs on each fitting and, where discharge lamps are used, also to ballast devices. The tube 4 may have ribs so that it can be stood in a channel, e.g. in a roadway (Fig. 10, not shown). Means for causing intermittent flashing of the lights may be included in each length of tube. Photo-electric switching means causing the lights to come on with decrease in daylight may also be incorporated. Part or the whole of the tube may be coloured and a separate reflector or a metallized reflecting layer on the tube itself may be provided.
