Abstract
103,054. Justice, P. M., (Bethlehem Steel Co.). April 25, 1916. Mountings; housing. - Relates to gun mountings, more particularly for use on submarine vessels, in which the training-pivot is carried by an arm pivoted to a fixed support, and consists in providing a leg or frame which is pivotally connected to the arm at one end and slidably mounted in guides on the deck or superstructure at the other end. Fig. 1 shows a pedestal gun mounting, the vertical pivot 15 of which is supported from the main deck 10 of a submarine by the apex of an A-shaped frame 22, and from the superstructure 11 by the apex of a V-shaped frame 14. The mounting can be raised to the firing position shown in full lines, or, after turning the gun down about its ordinary trunnions to the position shown at 18, can be bodily lowered through an opening 12 into the housed position (shown in chain lines) in a chamber between the decks 10, 11. The mounting is raised and lowered by a fluid-pressure piston-andcylinder device 28, 29, the piston-rod 31 of which is connected to the lower extremities of the frame 22, so as to cause them to move in fixed guides 26 carried by the deck 10. In the firing position, the elevating and training numbers occupy seats 19, 20 and use foot-rests 21, the seats and foot-rests being hinged to the mounting as at 19<1>, so as to fold against the mounting before it is housed.
