Abstract
A heat-insulating intumescent cellular material is prepared by substantially uniformly distributing throughout a mixture of (a) an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate, or a mixture thereof, and (b) an organic compound containing a plurality of groups containing reactive hydrogen, including at least one OH group, a particulate, preformed aminoplast resinous condensation product, an intumescing agent and a cellular - structure-producing amount of water and/or a carboxylic acid. The intumescing agent may be NH4Cl, NH4Br or ortho-, meta- or pyrophosphoric acid or an NH4, amine or salt-forming amide salt thereof. The isocyanate reactant may be monomeric or polymeric. The OH compound may be monomeric, a low polymer, e.g. a polyethylene glycol, or a polyester, polyesteramide or polyether having terminal OH groups, and may be substituted, e.g. by amino or thiol. Part of the OH compound may be replaced by a polyamine. An amino or amide catalyst may be present. The reaction mixture used for preparing the aminoplast resin preferably includes at least one saccharide, preferably a polysaccharide, a polyol having at least 4 OH groups, or an aminopolyol having a total of at least 4 amino plus OH groups, and may also contain a phenolic novolak or resole or dicyandiamide.
