A heat exchanger for space heating, comprises a compression welded and expanded aluminium panel 10 formed with a fluid inlet 14, fluid passages 13, 18, 19 and 20 and welded areas 11, 12 and 17, the panel having secured to it in thermal communication an aluminium flat plate heat-radiating surface element, of thermal conductivity greater than 90 British Thermal Units per hour per square foot, per degree Fahrenheit per foot, the element being attached in a removable manner to the panel by bolts 16. The surface element is spaced from the panel by aluminium heat-conducting blocks 21, of thermal conductivity similar to that of the element, which fit in the larger welded areas 17, the blocks being drilled at 22 to receive the bolts 16. A plurality of such plate elements spaced from one another by blocks such as 21 may be mounted on either side of the panel. In a modification, Fig. 3, the surface element comprises a corrugated plate 25, the troughs 27 of the plate being in thermal communication with the panel and the crests 26 being spaced from the panel to form radiating surfaces. Packing may be inserted between abutting metal surfaces to improve the thermal contact and may comprise synthetic resins or silicone paint loaded with powered metal, lead foil, silicone rubber or clay.
