Abstract
A lustrous and specular composite yarn comprises a metallized base thread and at least one support thread which is coiled around the base thread and which has a shrinkage relative to that of the base thread of 5% or less of that of the base thread of the composite yarn to aqueous solutions at about 100 DEG C. The supporting threads are given a heat treatment-either wet or dry-to a temperature higher than that encountered in the subsequent processing treatments, e.g. dyeing. If more than one supporting thread is used then there are at least one supporting thread coiled with Z twist and one with S twist. The base thread is formed e.g. by cutting strips from a sheet comprising a metal film-i.e. vapourized metal deposit or metal foil-coated or laminated between transparent, preferably thermoplastic, films. The sheet may be formed by laminating the metal foil between thermoplastic films using adhesives or heat, or the metallized side or sides of thermoplastic films with further film or films, or two metallized films in metal to metal fashion, or by coating a metallized film. The transparent film may be made from copolymers of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride or acrylonitrile, haloethylene polymers, halogen containing polymers, styrene polymers, ethyl acrylate, mixtures of ethyl acrylate with styrene polymers, vinyl toluene polymers, acrylonitrile polymers, thermoplastic film forming derivatives of cellulose, polyolefins, polyamides and polyesters. The metal may be gold, silver, zinc, magnesium, titanium, aluminium, tin and other metals that produce a specular appearance when interlaminated. Suitable adhesives include cellulose derivates while a volatile solvent may be added to reduce the viscosity of the adhesive during application.
