Abstract
1,029,519. Gear pumps and motors. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. Dec. 18, 1964 [Feb. 12, 1964], No. 51534/64. Heading F1F. A gear pump or motor comprising separable casing sections 11, 12, 13, Fig. 1 (not shown), defining a working chamber 19, housing on parallel shafts 23, 24 gears 26, 27 whose side faces engage complementary side faces 22, 29 on the casing sections 11, 13 respectively, includes wholly within the casing section 13 a chamber 28 spaced inwardly from the side face 29 to provide a thin deformable section 31. The chamber 28 is formed with an arm 28a, Fig. 3 (not shown), located between the gears and communicating through a bore 32 with the high pressure side of the pump or motor and a pair of arms 28b flaring outwardly in the direction of the low pressure side of the pump or motor. High pressure fluid within the chamber in opposition to the low pressure fluid outside the chamber deforms the section 31 so that the side face 29 is in sealing engagement with the adjacent side faces of the gears. Instead of the chamber 28 being formed in the casing section 13 it may be formed in the casing section 11 or in both. The arms 28b may instead be on the high pressure side and the arm 28a on the low pressure side.
