Abstract

1,029,356. Treating polyester yarn. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Nov. 4, 1964 [Nov. 4, 1963], No. 45006/64. Heading B5B. Yarn of synthetic linear condensation polyester is drawn in a first stage at 60-110‹ C., drawn in a second stage at 120-160‹ C., the total draw ratio being 5À5-1 to 6À5-1, then partially cooled under drawing tension to a temperature which is 10-35‹ C. below the maximum drawing temperature, and then wound up. In one embodiment, undrawn yarn having a birefringence of less than 0À003 is heated to a first stage drawing temperature by passage round a feed roll heated to 70-100‹ C., heated to the second stage drawing temperature by passage round a draw roll heated to 120- 160‹ C., and partially cooled under tension by passage round a second stage draw-roll heated to 100-125‹ C., and passed through an interlacing jet before winding up under a tension of 0À2-0À5 g. per den. The yarn may be wound up at a speed 3-10% less than that of the second stage draw roll, e.g. 2000-4000 yards per minute. In examples polyethylene terephthalate of intrinsic viscosity 0À6# is melt-spun at 300‹ C. into multifilaments using cross-flow air quenching.
