Abstract

102,920. Hughes, H. R. Dec. 27, 1915, [Convention date]. Bore-hole apparatus.-In a rotary drill for boring horizontal or approximately horizontal holes in the earth, particularly for destroying military fortifications, trenches, &c., and having the drill-operating member mounted in a movable yoke-shaped carrier pivoted to the supporting-structure, the supporting-structure forms a housing to protect the apparatus and comprises a top portion rotatable about an axis at right-angles to an axis of movement of the carrier. The drill is driven from a motor through a gear-box whereby the speed of rotation and feed and the direction of rotation of the drill may be varied, the motor and gear-box each constituting a separate unit of the apparatus. Two shafts from the gear-box carry gears engaging bevel-gears 6, 5 secured to a shaft 7 and a surrounding sleeve 7a respectively. The sleeve 7<a> rotates the drill-operating member C through bevel-gearing 5<a>, 8, 10, and the shaft 7 feeds or withdraws the member C by bevel-gears 6<a>, 11, each engaging an intermediate gear opposite the wheel 8 and driving a nut 12 on a threaded part 13 of the member C. The gearing is enclosed in a housing comprising a top portion 2 rotatably adjustable on a base portion 1, which forms an oil reservoir from which oil is raised to a receptacle 24, to lubricate the gearing, by a spiral groove 25 in the shaft 7, surplus oil returning to the reservoir through ducts 26. The member C projects through slots 19 in the top 2 and is carried in a yoke 15, which is preferably in two parts connected by caps 18 and is mounted on trunnions on the top 2, so that the drill may be adjusted in a vertical plane and then locked in position. Index fingers and scales are provided to check the horizontal and vertical adjustment of the drill, and levels are provided on the base 1. The drill B may be disconnected from the member C by a clutch H. A pump D connected to a swivel 31 forces water into the bore-hole to remove debris. Specification 101,162 is referred to.
