Abstract

1,029,179. Separating granular materials. SOC.GRENOBLOISE D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS HYDRAULIQUES (SOGREAH). Dec.4, 1963 [Dec. 7, 1962; Oct. 28, 1963], No. 47971/63. Heading B2H. Material to be separated is introduced into a vessel at a point between an upper vertical upward current classifying chamber 16 and a lower inclined chamber 15 of smaller cross-sections in which falling material accumulates to be scoured by the rising washing fluid. As shown in Fig. 1 the bottom chamber is defined by outer and inner conical walls 17, so material to be washed is introduced with carriage water into a cylinder 22 surrounding a clean water supply line 28. The material settles downwardly over a cone 41, the heavies with some entrained lights falling on to wall 17 of the lower chamber the lights being scoured back up into the upward current classifying chamber 16 by the higher velocity of washing water rising up from its inlet 51. A perforate screen 19 at the top of the upward current classifying chamber regulates and distributes the flow of washing water. The washing water and material may be supplied under pressure so that the water and heavies ejected from the bottom and the water and lights ejected from the top of the device each drive a cyclone to extract and recirculate the washing water, Fig. 2 not shown. Fig. 3 shows a version of the device in which the material to be separated is carried in the main stream of washing water taken from a mixing tank 38 and pumped at 45 to a cyclone 47 on the device. The cyclone 47 separates out a concentration of the material and delivers the separated water to the bottom of the device at 51 from where it rises as washing water. The top of the device may be open, Fig. 4 not shown, with the light fraction overflowing a weir and the material to be washed admitted into an open cylinder surrounding the water inlet pipe. In such an impressurized system the water is reclaimed by screening. A pneumatic version of the device is shown in Fig. 5 in which a hopper 56 receives the material to be cleaned, the material falling into a spreading cone. The lower chamber 15 has riffles 62, 63 to promote scouring of the accumulated heavies. The spreader cone and associated conical portion defining the lower chamber 15 may be streamlined along with the outer wall 17, Fig. 6 not shown. Instead of comprising bodies of revolution the device may comprise an upper cylindrical portion 16, Fig. 7, a deflected narrower portion 15 in which the heavies accumulate at 18, and an input shoot 12 at the junction to admit material to be separated.
