Abstract

A paper coating composition consists essentially of an aqueous dispersion of a pigment and a starch binder, the amount of pigment being within the range of 10% to 60% by weight of the composition, and at least a portion of the said binder is a pyro-converted cationic starch (see Division C3) having a Relative Viscosity within the range 1.08 to 1.23, the amount of the pyro-converted cationic starch being at least 2% of the weight of the pigment. The pigment may be a clay. The pyro-converted cationic starch may be the sole binder or may be mixed with oxidized starch.ALSO:A starch having cationic properties, i.e. one into the molecule of which cationic groups such as primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary amines, sulphonium or phosphonium groups have been introduced by esterification, etherification or other reactions is pyroconverted by heating until its relative viscosity as a aqueous solution at 30 DEG C. is between 1.08 a 1.23. In examples, starch is etherified with b -diethylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride and heated at a pH below 4 to 305 DEG F.; and starch so etherified is further reacted with methyl iodide to form a quaternary ammonium compound. The process may be applied to corn starch, high amylose corn starch, waxy maize starch, tapioca starch, wheat starch, rice starch, potato starch, sago starch, sorghum or waxy sorghum starch which may be raw, oxidized, etherified or esterified but must not contain any substantial amount of dextrine, or to starch components such as amylose or amylopectin.ALSO:Sheets of paper are coated with an aqueous dispersion of a pigment and a starch binder, the amount of pigment being within the range of 10 to 60% of the composition, and at least a portion of the binder is a pyroconverted cationic starch having a relative viscosity at 30 DEG C. within the range 1.08 to 1.23, the amount of the pyroconverted cationic starch being at least 2%. of the weight of the pigment. The pigment may be a clay. The pyroconverted cationic starch may be the sole binder or may be mixed with oxidized starch. The coatings may be applied by air knife, roll coat, trailing blade or brush coating and the paper subsequently dried and finished.
