Abstract
1,028,728. Securing washers to bolts against loss. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. May 1, 1964, No. 18166/64. Heading F2H. [Also in Division E2] A fastener element comprises a shank portion 1 and a head portion 3, the underside of the head portion having an annular recess 5 which surrounds the longitudinal axis X-X of the element, the radially inner surface of the recess being inclined inwardly from the underside of the head portion towards the axis X-X, and a ring of resilient material held in the recess with part of the ring below the underside of the head portion. In the embodiment shown, the lip 13 of the ring 9, which is made of rubber, is engaged in the recess by first expanding the ring. A bead 11 on the ring, which is slightly greater in width than the entrance to the recess 5 prevents the ring from entering completely into the recess. As described the fastener element is of the type in which its shank is passed through an opening in a first member and a helical slot in the shank receives a wire secured to a second member, so that rotation of the shank causes the two members to be drawn together and causes the bead 11 on the ring 9 to be compressed between the head 3 and the first member so as to form a seal around the opening therein. Alternatively, the fastener element is a bolt.
