Abstract

Foamed polyurethane materials are prepared by a process which comprises reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a hydroxyl group-containing polyether which is a copolymer of tetrahydrofuran and a 1,2-alkylene oxide and contains 60-85% by weight of oxytetra-methylene units. Particularly suitable alkylene oxides are propylene oxide, butylene oxide or a mixture thereof. The copolymerization of the tetrahydrofuran and alkylene oxide may be carried out in the presence of a polyhydroxy compound such as butane 1,4-diol or 1,2,6-hexane triol. Suitable catalysts for copolymerization include strong acids and Friedel-Crafts catalysts (particularly boron trifluoride). Surface-active reagents, foam-stabilizing agents, colouring matters, fillers, plasticizers, flame-retardants and antioxidants may be incorporated into the foam. Gas-generating agents for a one-shot process include water and inert low boiling, halogenated hydrocarbons, such as methylene chloride, and mixtures of the two.
