Abstract

1,028,659. Printing and embossing apparatus. MODERN ENGRAVING & MACHINE CO. Sept.10, 1964, No. 37155/64. Heading B6C. In a machine for successively effecting multicolour printing and embossing on a travelling web 10 to thus produce a multiplicity of embossed coloured labels, the printing cylinders 12, 14, 16 are imaged such that any stretch transversely of the web arising in the bit of the embossing rollers 20, 22 is taken into account to ensure substantial registration of the printed and embossed designs. In order to effect such imaging for any particular web material travelling through a particular pair of embossing rollers with a particular roller bit pressure, the stretch of the embossing rollers is measured by passing therethrough a sheet of the web material thus providing an embossed sample 36. This is then photographed, the resulting print 40 being compared with a photograph 38 of the identical portion of the embossing design on the rollers 20, 22. Any displacement of the design on the sample 36 can thus be measured by overlaying the photographs 40 and 38, these measurements being subsequently used in the photo-engraving technique employed to image the cylinders 12, 14 and 16.
