A printing device for an adding or like machine comprises a type-carriage 26 slidable longitudinally with respect to the platen 12 one character space so that each of a plurality of type-wheels 5 can print in two character positions. In moving from one character space to the other, each mechanism 6, 13, 14 which is operated to selectively rotate the type-wheels, is coupled alternatively to a pair of associated actuators 3 driven by a set-up device, not shown, or a totalizer 4. In the embodiment shown, the type-wheels 5 are mounted at a <SP>1</SP>/ 8 th inch pitch on horizontal slides 7 movable to effect impression and assembled in the carriage 26 which itself is slidable in stationary frames 29, 30. A rod 31 effects the one letter-space movement by means of a forked member 36 resiliently attached to a lever 43 operated by a vertical slide 48, and a cam 53 cyclically advanced by a ratchet 54, pawl 56 and a cam 61 on a main shaft 11. As shown, twelve actuators, two to each type-wheel, mounted at <SP>1</SP>/ 6 th inch spacing, are alternatively mechanically connected to their associated type-wheel. Each type-wheel 5 has a pinion 6 engaged by a rack 13 connected through a pivot 16 to a lever 14 fulcrumed at 18. The levers 14 are at 1/3rd inch spacing and are located each between two adjacent actuators 3 so that when the carriage is moved, a hole 24 in the levers 14 either engages a lug 21 of the odd number actuators or a lug 22 of the even number actuators.
