In a cable railway winch having a main support plate 11, Fig. 2, attached to a base frame 10, the plate 11 has attachment bolt holes 14, Fig. 1 (not shown), symmetrically arranged about its horizontal axis so that the arrangement may be readily converted to left or right hand arrangements by inversion of the base 10 and plate 11. The drive pulleys 15 together with the brake 20 are overhung from a shaft extension 16 (not shown) of the gear box 17. A side plate 12 supporting the shaft 22 for the cable reversing pulleys 21 may comprise two parts 12a, 12b attached to the plate 11 through bolts 19.
