The stitch length in a sewing machine is changeable in the same direction by means in operative association with the lever for reversing the stitch direction and operable between fixed limits by a pedal, knee lever or the like, whereby the operative can move the reverse lever temporarily to a predetermined position to deter the stitch length, and can quickly cause the lever to revert to the normal stitch length position. As shown, the feed control lever 1 is normally spring- biased to a pre-set upper position corresponding to long stitches (e.g. 4 per inch). A rod 4, slidable in a fixed bracket 5, carries at its lower end an adjustable nose 3, and carries above bracket 5 an adjustable collar 8. A spring 6, acting between bracket 5 and a collar 7 on rod 4, biases the latter downwards to engage collar 8 with bracket 5 and to depress lever 1 to a pre-set position corresponding to short stitches (e.g. 14 or 16 per inch) which constitute the normal stitch length. Rod 4 is connected by a flexible cable 9 to a treadle which, when depressed, raises rod 4 to allow lever 1 to assume the long stitch position. The upward movement of rod 4 may be limited by a further collar 11 provided thereon. Lever 1 is movable at any time in the reverse stitching direction.
