Abstract

[Also in Division B6] A device for locating units of a product, e.g. groups of bacon slices, on a supporting member such as a card or tray prior to further packaging steps (not detailed) comprises a magazine holding the member substantially vertically and reciprocable member removing means for pulling each member from the magazine at right angles to its major surface and bringing it to a horizontal position beneath a product supply means which drops a unit on to it. The member may be a card consisting of two hinged halves one of which is folded over the product. In the machine shown, two magaxines 21, 22, the width of which is adjustable by screwed rods and a crank 60, supply a central loading position to where the product units 11 are fed by a belt 12. Suction grippers 39, 40 are pivotally mounted on the rods of pneumatic motors 47, 48 fitted on a transversely reciprocating carriage 29. The carriage is movable so that when a card 10 is being removed from one magazine, another is being deposited at the loading position. The cards are urged forward by weights 78 on telescopically adjustable rods 77 and retained at the front of the magazines by pins 70. Air from a jet 71 assists in separating each foremost card which is then pulled outwards and turned to the horizontal as the grippers retract and are pivoted on their rods by cam means 53, 55. As each card is carried towards the loading position by the carriage, a wire 91 folds it about a central hinge and it is left with a portion supported by rods 84 beneath the conveyer 12 and a portion resting on a frame 93. The weight of the product falling on it depresses the card to contact an outfeed conveyer 16 and it is fed clear of the loading position. A wire 94 folds down the upper half of the card. The product may be centralized relative to the loading position by means operated by a photo-electric scanner 102, 103. Further scanning means 95, 96 responds to the absence of a card to have one moved into position. In an alternative arrangement in which a flat card is loaded (Fig. 3, not shown), a feeler is contacted by a product unit to cause a stop checking the feeding out of a loaded card to be lowered when the unit has been deposited on a card.
