Abstract

1,260,251. Packaging machines. J. J. SHUTTLEWORTH. 1 April, 1970 [28 April, 1969], No. 15418/70. Heading B8C. In a packaging machine comprising a horizontally reciprocable platform 45 to which objects are fed by a first conveyer 13, and from which the objects are lifted by a vacuum head 16, the platform 45 then being retracted to the left and the vacuum head being lowered to push the objects into a box 15 on a second conveyer 12, pads are placed between layers of objects in the box 15 by means of suction cups 131 which remove a pad from a stack 115 and transfer it to a carriage 150 secured to the underside of the platform 45. When the platform 45 is retracted to the left, the pad is stripped from the carriage 150 by stops 200 and falls into a funnel 40 from which it is pushed into the box 15 by the descending vacuum head 16. The platform 45 has a vertical track 62 which is pushed by a roller 61 carried by a lever 60 rotated by a piston and cylinder 50, 51 to reciprocate the platform 45. Rollers (not shown) on the platform 45 engage cam tracks 42 carried by the funnel 40 such that the latter is lowered as the platform 45 is retracted. The stack 115 of pads is carried in a rack 100 which is adjustable by means of threaded shafts 102. The suction cups 131 are carried on an arm 130 keyed to a shaft 125 rotated by an hydraulic motor 136 to place a pad on horizontal frame members (165, Fig. 1) and on lower ribs 160 on the ends of the side members of the carriage 150. On retraction of the platform 45 and the carriage 150, the pad abuts stops 170 carried by the horizontal frame members (165). On subsequent movement of the carriage 150 towards the first conveyer 13, the pad is pushed by lugs (180) on the carriage over the stops 200 so that on subsequent retraction of the carriage 150 the pad is stripped therefrom by the stops 200.
