Abstract

1,028,036. Bed-settees. G.R.L.B. MARIN. May 1, 1964 [May 3, 1963], No. 18214/64. Heading A4J. A couch consists of a frame 1, a seat 2 slightly inclined to the horizontal and a backrest 3 which is hinged at 19 so that it can be pivoted upwardly into a horizontal position to convert the couch into two superposed beds formed by seat 2 and backrest 3 respectively, Fig 4 (not shown). Backrest 3 has side members 15 to which a tube 20 is pivoted at 22. Tube 20 telescopes in a tube 21 pivoted at 23 to an armrest 6. When the backrest is in the upper berth position telescopic tubes 20, 21 are in a vertical position and mutally interlocked by a bolt 24. The front edge of seat 2 is supported by a bolt 13 pivoted to frame 1 and connected for movement with tube 21. The bolt may either support the seat as shown or it may be displaced into a sideways position by tube 21 when the backrest is brought into the upper berth position. In this latter position bolt 13 engages in an aperture 11 in a cam 12 beneath seat 2 and thereby frees the seat or lower berth so that it rests horizontally on seats 14. In the couch position shown side members 15 form with backrest 3 and frame 1 a space to house bedding. Side members 15 also form guards at the head and foot of the upper berth.
