Abstract

[Also in Division G1] Apparatus for detecting a temperature change at one of a number of detection points comprises a Wheatstone bridge having a pair of detection arms, each arm having an equal number of temperature sensitive resistors; a current sensitive device coupled to the bridge for detecting changes in resistance in the bridge arms; two photo-sensitive devices energized with electro-magnetic radiation; and a movable mask coupled to the current sensitive device such that when the bridge is unbalanced the mask reduces the radiation falling on one or other of the photo-sensitive devices, the device supplying an output signal when the radiation falling on them is reduced below a predetermined level. As described, the temperature sensing resistors are semi-conductor elements having a negative temperature coefficient and the photocells are cadmium sulphide. The current sensitive device is a galvanometer or milliameter having the mask coupled to the indicating needle. The output from the photo-cells may be amplified and used to operate a fire warning or protection device.
