Abstract

An N-alkyl-a -pyrrolidone is prepared by the action of carbon monoxide, under a pressure of at least 100 atmos., with an N-alkyl allylamine, having an alkyl group with not more than 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of cobalt or a compound thereof as catalyst used in a quantity of from 0.060 to 0.265 gm. atoms of cobalt per mol of N-alkyl allylamine. Suitable temperatures are from 220 DEG to 290 DEG C. The cobalt catalyst may be in the form of the metal or a complex salt or soap, preferably dicobalt octacarbonyl in solution or suspension in a liquid medium, e.g. the N-alkyl-a -pyrrolidone itself, hydrocarbons, or oxygen compounds boiling above 230 DEG C. such as sulfolane or ketones. The examples relate to the preparation of N-methyl, N-ethyl, N-isobutyl, N-octyl and N-lauryl pyrrolidones.
