Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1027749/C2/1> <FORM:1027749/C2/2> wherein R1 . . . R5 H or hydrocarbon radicals (or R1 and R5 together may complete a carbocyclic ring), provided that one only of R2 and R3 is H; one of X and Y is OH when R2 or R3 respectively is H, the other of X and Y being -O-R-OH and R is a divalent hydrocarbon radical. The compounds are made by reacting the epoxyalcohol (II) with HO-R-OH in presence of an acid catalyst such as H2SO4, AlCl3 or BF3. Examples describe the preparation of 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-4-methylpenton - 2,3 - diol and 2 - (2 - hydroxyethoxy)-4-methylpenton-3,4-diol.
