Abstract
A mineral oil distillate is hydrogenated, and then separated into paraffins, naphthenes and aromatics by adsorption on a solid adsorbent, for example, silica gel. The separated fractions may thereafter be subjected to further treatment with oleum and fuller's earth. The hydrogenation renders any sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen and olefin compounds innocuous in the adsorption step, and may be effected at 250-400 DEG C. and 5-150 kg./cm.2 The preferred catalyst is NiS.WS3.Al2O3. The hydrogenated product may be stripped with steam or nitrogen at elevated temperatures. The paraffins and naphthenes may be successively eluted from the adsorbent by a low molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbon, such as pentane, and the aromatics by a low molecular weight aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene.
