Abstract

1,027,521. Reverberation apparatus. PYE Ltd. May 21, 1963 [May 30, 1962], No. 20804/62. Heading H4R. In an apparatus for providing reverberation the input signal is analysed to determine the relative amplitudes of a predetermined number of discrete frequencies, or narrow bands of frequencies, and control signals derived which are representative of the amplitudes of these frequency components, the control signals are then delayed and used to control the amplitudes of similar frequency components produced in the apparatus which are mixed with the original signal and fed to the output. Multiple reverberation effects may be produced by feeding the frequency components produced by the apparatus back into the input of the apparatus. The Figure shows the preferred embodiment in which the input signal after amplification in amplifier 1 and 4 is fed to a plurality of band-pass filters f1, f2 &c., the outputs of which are rectified and applied to a delay circuit RC to provide control signals DC1, DC2 &c. These control signals are used to control the level of frequency components similar to those from which the control signals were derived, the components being selected by band-pass filters f1-f2, f2-f3 &c. from the white noise source 5. The outputs from the amplitude controllers C1, C2 &c. are combined and mixed with the original signal from a volume control circuit 2 and fed to the output amplifier 3. The control signals DC1, DC2 &c. may be modified by the signals from a device A in dependence on the ambience of the studio &c. The white noise source 5 and filters f1-f2, f2-f3 &c. may be replaced by a number of fixed frequency oscillators. Twenty channels over a bandwidth of two kilocycles are recommended.
