729,055. Transmission systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd.. Aug. 26, 1953 [Aug. 27, 1952], No. 21590/52. Class 40 ( 4). The original speech or other intelligence signal is translated to a relatively higher frequency band and is then sampled, the time scale of the samples being expanded so as to produce a frequency-compressed signal. As shown, a speech signal in the frequency range 300-3000 c/s. passes through an amplifier 2 to a mixer 3 where it modulates a 1 Mc/s. oscillation. A band-pass filter 5 selects the upper sideband which then amplitude-modulates the beam of a cathode-ray tube 6. This beam is arranged to produce a circular trace on a luminescent screen 7 at a frequency of 3.33 kc/s. and this trace is scanned by the beam of an iconoscope 8 at a frequency of 330 c/s., the effect being to sample the output signal from the filter 5 at a frequency of 3 kc/s., and to expand the time scale of the samples to ten times its original value so that the output signal of the iconoscope 8 lies in the frequency range 100.03-100.30 kc/s. This signal is passed through an amplifier 11 and a band-pass filter 12 and is then either transmitted as it is or demodulated by means of a mixer 14 and a filter 16 to produce an output signal in the frequency range 30-300 c/s. In modifications, the cathode-ray tube 6 may be of the storage tube type, and it may share a common screen with the iconoscope 8.
