Abstract

1,027,397. Benefication of beryllium ore. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY and COUNCIL FOR SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. Feb. 7, 1963 [Feb. 22,1962], No. 7021/62. Heading B2H. . Beryllium ore is concentrated in a process in which mica is removed from the pulp which is then conditioned with acid fluoride and given a collector additive for the removal of iron minerals by froth flotation, the pulp then being washed and given a further froth flotation to recover the beryllium ore. As shown in the flow diagram the ore ground and constituting a pulp is fed to a cyclone washer 1 with a dispersant such as sodium silicate added at the rate of 1.5 1bs/ton. By this means slimes smaller than 24 microns are removed to waste line 2. Water is added to the underflow washer 1 and a second washer 4 is employed to remove a further proportion of slimes. The underflow from washer 4 proceeds to a tank 6 in which an amine acetate collector and a frother such as methyl isobutyl carbinol are added. In tank 6 a pulp density of 20% solids is achieved and the contents pass to froth flotation cell 8 in which the float is substantially mica and the tailings comprise the beryl values which pass to tank 10. In tank 10 the acid fluoride is added in the form of sodium fluoride at 16 1bs/ton and sulphuric acid, sufficient to produce a pH of 3. 5, at 6 1bs/ton. Proceeding to a further tank 11 the pulp has a petroleum sulphonate collector added at the rate of 0. 5 1bs/ton and proceeds to a froth flotation cell 12 in which the float comprises iron and iron minerals and the tailings pass to the three stage cyclone washer 15,16 and 17. The underflow of the washing stage is fed to a tank 19 where sulphuric acid is added at the rate of 0. 5 1bs/ton, to adjust the pH to 2. 5; a petroleum sulphonate collector also being added at this time. The pulp is then transferred to froth flotation chamber 20 the float of which contains the beryllium values and is thickened at 22 and passed by way of tank 27 to a drum filter 28 the scrapings from which are dried in rotary kiln 29. Using distilled water an ore assaying 0. 32% beryllium oxide gave a concentrate assaying 9.63% with a recovery rate of 85%.
