Abstract

1,027,342. Bending. T. E. LAXO. May 3, 1963 [May 3, 1962], No. 17585/63. Heading B3E. In a can body forming machine of the type in which a can body blank C is bent round a mandrel 12, the blank C is held against the mandrel 12 by a clamp 80 controlled by a cam 50, the profile of which can be adjusted to vary the timing and duration of the clamping. The clamp 80 is carried by rods 86 having at their upper ends a wedge block 90 which is forced downwards by rotary movement of a wedge 100 keyed to a shaft 102. The shaft 102 is rotated by a compression spring 126 via lever 110, rod 109 and lever 108 under the control of a cam 50. The cam 50 is a compound cam having two parts 51, 52 which can be adjusted by a slot and screw 54, 56 to vary the duration of the clamping operation, and the angular position of the cam 50 on the drive shaft can be adjusted by a clamping nut. The angular position of the arm 110 relative to the cam follower 120 can be adjusted by set screws 115. The blank C is bent around the mandrel by a pair of wing clamps 15, 16 which are pivoted to the machine frame at 17 and are operated by connecting rods 22 which are pivoted to cranks 24. The angular position of crank arms 24 on the shafts 28, 29 can be adjusted and the radial distance of the crank arms 24 from the shafts 28, 29 can also be adjusted.
